Frequently asked questions

Do these cues work at the grocery store too?

Yes — they're the same fruit. The difference is that market and u-pick produce was usually picked riper, so the cues are stronger: more smell on a ripe cantaloupe, more give in a ripe peach. In January, the cues mostly tell you what the fruit isn't.

Which crops keep ripening after picking?

Peaches, pears, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and plums soften and sweeten a little on the counter. Berries, cherries, grapes, and citrus are done the moment they're picked — what you pick is what you get, so pick well.

How do I print a pocket card?

Choose a crop in the picker and hit Print card — the page prints just that card at wallet size. Print a few before u-pick season and leave them in the glovebox.
